People are weighing in on the law suit that CEO/Owner of New Grains Gluten Free Bakery and Board Member of Celiac Sprue Association, Timothy Lawson has brought against Senator Orrin Hatch in the federal labeling laws of gluten free products.

Hatch’s response:  “There is no legitimate cause of action against a legislator for failing to appropriate taxpayer dollars to address any one constituent’s specific, individual desires.”

Dear Senator Hatch,

I am writing this letter to you in response to your comment yesterday regarding Mr. Lawson.

As a Senator that represents Utah, you are a member of a committee that has an impact on all citizens in the United States.  This committee makes decisions that impact several million individuals who suffer from medical conditions that require a gluten-free diet.    Therefore, the comment “to address any one constituent’s specific, individual desires” highly underestimates the impact.

Mr. Lawson has Celiac Disease which requires a medical prescription of gluten-free food and medication.  I am a resident of the United States of America, have Celiac Disease and live gluten-free.  Those who do not maintain this gluten-free medical requirement will have a multi-system reaction and in time will die.

In order to make sure gluten-free is maintained as a medical prescription, it requires access to proper food labeling and food handling.  How anyone is able to ensure the food is safe without regulations?

Five years ago, I was diagnosed and started gluten-free after suffering for sixteen years.  I want to work everyday and continue to be a tax paying citizen.

Please take a moment to better understand medically required gluten-free need.  Resources are available as well as a survey on gluten-free labeling which supports the need.  To obtain this information call 877-272-4272.
